What inspired us to start Bright Energy 101 was the opportunity to aim our talents towards protecting our natural environment AND creating great opportunities for people. Our work in advancing efficiency, conservation and renewable energy for schools is of great benefit for the environment. Our program also advances education, improves facilities and creates great career opportunities. We are excited, and are extremely lucky, to be building a company that does well by doing great work.

We believe modern progress and environmental protection must become inseparable partners. To us, the partnership between sustainability and development is logical and inspiring. Although one can easily find reasons to be skeptical that economies will advance without creating environmental peril, there is a growing movement, and impressive examples, of economic progress linked to protecting and preserving our precious environment. You need look no further than some of the most successful and admired companies in the world for evidence of that movement, including Apple, Johnson & JohnsonAdobe, and Patagonia.

Climate change is arguably our greatest environmental threat. To face this challenge, California established the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006. This public policy takes a comprehensive, long-term approach to addressing climate change, and does so in a way that aims to protect our natural resources while maintaining a robust economy. We have passed the ten-year anniversary of this policy, and it is working!  California has reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its peak (in 2004) by 10%, with healthy economic growth. Arguably, in the decade after the Global Warming Solutions Act, this policy significantly contributed to California’s economic growth, as companies invest and innovate towards meeting the policy goals, great jobs are being created

The hardest work in battling climate change clearly remains ahead. California’s goal is to reduce GHG emissions by 80% by 2050. It is a bold course, leading us from a fossil fuel based economy to one powered by renewable energy. This path, sometimes named ‘‘Deep Decarbonization’’ is seen as technically and economically achievable by many.  We find the Deep Decarbonization path as an exciting opportunity to fight climate change, reduce pollution and creating great opportunities for those approaching college and careers. With the founding of Bright Energy 101, a Public Benefit Corporation, we are dedicating ourselves to helping schools get on the Deep Decarbonization path – and saving money while doing so! Our Program enables Districts to achieve an 80% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030 – helping to lead the way in California.

. . . so, yes, we are inspired by the opportunity to make ‘‘big picture’’ contributions, battling climate change and advancing towards a clean energy economy. But what motivates us, and gets us going each day is the work with great people: teachers, energy managers, business and educational leaders. We aim our work at providing steady and small contributions, which will add up to betterment of school and advancing their professions. Building these relationships, and working towards the greater mission, is extremely rewarding and enjoyable.
